OsMonitor is an employee monitoring software that is capable activity logging on the audited computers, and application's usage blocking. This software allows to disable computer games, chat programs, web sites at URL level and USB ports. It could protect the computer against virus infections.
The package is distributed as a client-server; the first step is the server-side software installation on a workstation, and the second is client set up on the monitored computers. It runs absolutely invisible from the user's eyes.
The installation is quite easy, and it can be realized by non-experienced users. The server-side installation can be deployed on a standard computer, but OsMonitor is recommended on a server (24x7 up-time). Once the server software is running it is possible to continue with the client-side part of the application on the monitored workstations.
The client-side set-up is a self-guided procedure, which asks for the IP, computer-name or domain-name of the server to establish the communication. In addition, it offers two operational modes; the most common is the silent mode; that means the program runs undetectable for the user; and the second is the visible mode. This mode is used in countries where the laws require transparent monitoring.
OsMonitor features four modules, including monitoring, restricting, management and reporting. In the monitoring module, is possible to audit and record computer activities, like web-sites visited, application's usage, chat conversations, email sent/received, file's activities (copy and delete), USB connection and bandwidth usage.
The restricting module, enables to create policies at group or particular computer level, taking full control over the installed applications, including computer games or other applications, web-sites by URL keywords, USB disk's connections and uncommon web download/upload files.
The management module, enables IT administrators to operate remotely the monitoring computers, accessing them via a built-in remote-desktop, restart/shutdown, view or end process, software inventory, broadcast messages and other administration tasks.
Finally, during our test OsMonitor has proven to be a powerful software to monitor the computer activities on local networks; it could be useful when the workstations are distributed across different buildings. The deployment process is relatively simple; it can be realized by non-technical users with success.
